Cookiecase Touch Could Use Some More Cooking

The nice people at Cookiecat LLC recently gave me the privilege to review what had the potential to be the most awesome iPod Touch 4g case ever. Introducing the Cookiecase Touch.
The iPhone 4/4s is a gorgeous design, I simply love it, yet unfortunately the iPod Touch 4g is still stuck with the rounded aluminium back. Therefore when I came across this magical case I leapt at the opportunity to review it. The Cookiecase Touch makes your iPod look like an iPhone, how awesome is that?
The Aesthetics:
The Cookiecase Touch features a two-layer design; a hard polycarbonate shell reinforced with an aluminium edge. All of the buttons are replaced with buttons on the case that are 90 degrees to case, making them much easier to press.
The back of the case is polished and glossy. It hides fingerprints very well, however it picks up micro-scratches like a magnet. The back is also
translucent, allowing the Apple logo as well as any custom engraving to show through. There is a cutout for the camera and microphone that is pretty standard, however I have noticed that when taking photos where a particularly large light sources is prevalent such as the sun, I saw some interference due to the refraction of light though the back of the case around the lens. But then again, the iPod Touch does not take great photos anyways.
The case is quite slim, it only adds 3.0 mm (H) x 3.0 mm (W) x 0.8 (D) mm to the profile of the iPod Touch. The case if flush to the screen so while you get that edge to edge beauty, the case is not really meant for setting the iPod face down.
The Functionality:
The Cookiecase Touch greatly improves the use of all of the power and volume buttons. It also leaves the headphone and 30 pin connector ports open and usable without removing the case. When playing games or using the device in general I found that the aluminium band and rectangular form factor provide a comfortable grip on the device. Taking pictures or changing volume is a snap, and my drop-on-my-face-when-laying-down-ratio has definitely decreased which is a plus. One last bonus of the Cookiecase Touch is the great deception of appearing you have an iPhone 4/4s, or to someone very out of the loop, the iPhone 5.
The Bad:
Time for the bad… Unfortunately the Cookiecase Touch has a few negatives that can not be overlooked. First of all I mentioned the light refraction and micro-scratches, however those are not so severe. The main problem I encountered was subsurface cracks that then led to pieces falling off. Not something you would expect by a “Premium” case. The two bottom corners where the metal ends leaving an opening for the ports is where I first noticed the problem. Since the case is snap on, each corner has a small plastic edge that hold the iPod in place. However this is where the cracks and eventually breaks occurred, rendering the case unstable/useless. I have superglued this case numerous times trying to hold it on, and I am pretty sure I ended up gluing the case to my iPod. This should not have occurred though, and I am upset that it did. Alas there is more bad. Dropping my iPod onto a carped floor or a bed from a low high often results in the separation of case and iPod, which defeats the purpose of even having a case. The last bit of bad that has bothered me is that the edges of the case, where the gap in the metal is, is sharp. So sharp in fact that I have cut myself by holding the case wrong. The edges also get snagged on loose strings when I pull it out of my pocket of my pants.
The Overall:
So there you have it. The Cookiecase Touch by Cookiecat LLC. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with the case. Overall I give the case 3 Stars. The case is stunningly sleek and sexy, all of the aesthetics of the iPhone for only $35 dollars. Yet while the case holds strong in appearance and functionality, it falls short in quality of design. I would expect the case to hold together better for the price. The Cookiecase Touch can be purchase HERE, as long as your careful I would recommend it, but if your not I suggest you find something that offers a little more protection.
