Mac App Review: CleanGenius

June 29, 2012 in Mac, Utilities

CleanGenius by EaseUS Software is a Mac app that allows you to clean up your hard drive, and trying to make your Mac run faster than it was when it was fully loaded with a lot of unnecessary data.

The concept is simple. Just click on a button to scan all your data on your computer, and you can choose which ones to delete. This can be done manually. However, just because it can be manually done, it does not mean it is a tedious process. The app actually divides your all your data into categories of types of data, such as system caches, user caches, system logs, user logs, user trash, user downloads and my Mac. Notice how it has a lot of categories, but most of them are regarding file types that users might not want, and the type of data that makes your computer feel sluggish when it is abundant.

There are also tabs within the app. Duplicates, Disk Usage, Uninstall, Free Memory and Login Items. These tabs allow you to quickly access the way in which you want to clean up your mac. Duplicates is simple. It scans your folders to find duplicating files, and will let you delete them. But you heard me, I said folders. Not the entire disk. The way in which this finds duplicates is that you have to pick certain folders, and you will have to drag and drop them into the app. The app will not search your entire hard disk.

Disk Usage is pretty much the same concept. The app will show you how much of the disk is being used by what type of file. The sweet feature is that the app can show this to you using a pie chart. However the negative side again is that you will have to manually drag and drop certain folders to see the disk usage, which I think is a pretty stupid idea since usually when you would like to see your actual disk usage, you will want to know how your entire disk is being used, not how each folder is being used.

Uninstall is a similar feature to first Fast Clean tab. You can see all your apps that exist on your Mac, and you can choose which to delete. This is again divided into 2 different groups: System applications and Applications, which is a pretty nice touch.

Free Memory is a feature that I have loved to use in the past and had actual dedicated apps just for that function, and this is built-in to the app. You can see your memory usage, and with one simple click, you can free up some memory from your RAM.

Lastly is Login Items. This feature is actually built-in to the Mac in the System Preferences. This essentially allows you to see what apps will automatically open when you logon to your computer, and you can disable them with a simple click.

In conclusion, the functionality of this app is pretty cool. One thing I like about it is that everything is built-in to one app. Before, I had many separate dedicated apps for finding duplicate files, uninstalling apps and freeing up some memory. The fact that all of this is built-in to one makes everything so simple, although technically it is not as simple as you think it is. I am sure that the developers of the app have spent a lot of time making this app come to life, however there are some downsides. The main one is something I have mentioned already. In specifically, under the Disk Usage and Duplicate tabs, you have to manually drag and drop certain folders to start searching. You cannot search your entire computer with just a click, like you can do with the other tabs. Why is this? I do not know, but it seems odd how the app’s concept is to clean your Mac, but for these two tabs, it makes me feel like I am just re-organizing and cleaning certain folders. Overall, the concept of trying to make your Mac run faster is a great concept. It has been tried over and over again by various apps, but I do think that this app makes it easier for the user to clean your Mac, instead of having to do everything manually. Has this made my Mac any faster? Yes, to an extent. It is definitely noticeable. However, this whole process is not a once-in-a-lifetime process. This is something you would do on a weekly basis, and I just feel as if there is one more thing to do in my life.

The app will cost you $29.99

Charge Up With Summer!

June 19, 2012 in Android, Business, Business, Computers, iPad, iPhone, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Mac, Main Blog, PC, Phones, Product, Slideshow, Tablets, Travel, Travel, Travel, Travel, Travel

So summer is here and the sun is shining, but now you have a terrible dilemma. You want to be outside but the electricity is inside, so what do you do? What if I told you, that all you had to do was strap on a backpack and you would be good to go? I know you may be thinking “Awww, it’s summer; schools out, I don’t wanna wear a backpack.” Just hear me out. Samsonite developed a very light weight that makes a great travel bag, laptop tote, or overnight rucksack. Introducing the Samsonite Solar Powered Backpack.

While the Solar Backpack clearly lacks creativity in name, Samsonite obviously chose to spend that time on the actual product. Time well spent, in my opinion.

The Use

The Solar Backpack goes on like a normal backpack, no surprise there. I found the straps and back to be extremely comfortable, even when carrying a laptop and a few books. Here is where it gets interesting though. The Solar Backpack has a 12v adapter (a car charging port) attached to the front pocket and connected to a solar panel. With this port you can plug in any adapter that you would normally plug into a car and supply power to that device. The backpack works great on iPhone, iPads, iPods, and numerous other portable devices. The smaller devices can be charged in about 4 hours of sunlight, while larger electronics will take longer. One trick that I do is use my USB Power Bank, a portable power pack, and have that connected to the backpack and always charging when in the sun, then I just plug in my devices into that and I can have power regardless of whether I have sun or not.

The only problem I had with Samsonite was that they do no provide a USB car adapter, therefore I had to purchase my own to use with my iDevices.

The Compartments

The Solar Backpack is a treasure trove of pockets. The Backpack consists of three main compartments ranging to the largest, which can accommodate a laptop up to 15.9 inches along with some books, to the smallest front panel which is great for storing all of those gadgets. On the outside you will find a side zippered pocket as well as a mesh water bottle holder, both of which are good sized. The only problem I have noticed with the compartments is that there is no hole in the front one to feed a charging cable out to a device or headphones from a charging device to my ears.

The Solar Panel

I thought I would breifely mention the quality of the solar panel. It is flexible and durable, and it appears that it will be able to withstand a beating, which is good especially if you are a frequent traveler and choose to use this bag as your carry on. The only problem I have noticed is that the both the solar panel and the backpack get quite hot, expectantly so, considering they are black and sitting out in the sun. I just worry that a laptop might get overheated in these conditions, so be careful.

 The Overall

Overall the Samsonite Solar Powered Backpack is a great product. It is very spacious and comfortable as well as durable. The solar technology works great at topping up my devices and I take comfort in the fact that I can now venture outside without having to worry about dead batteries. The only problems I had were the lack of an adapter as well as a headphone hole and, the excessive absorption of heat. The Solar Powered Backpack can be purchased HERE originally for $300, but right now it is ON SALE FOR $134.99!! So get it while its hot! I give it 4.5 Stars because of the minor problems.

WWDC 2012

June 2, 2012 in iPad, iPhone, Mac, Main Blog, Slideshow, Uncategorized

I don’t usually talk about Apple. I don’t. But with their WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) just over the horizon, I thought it was worthwhile just to make a quick note of all the things we could be expected to see, based on analyst predictions and we have seen in past WWDCs.

First off, software. According to analyst Shaw Wu, this is what Apple is really hitting for this year, with a likely reveal of iOS 6. However, that’s not all that Apple is planning to reveal this year. According to blogging websites 9to5Mac and BGR, Apple is planning to radically change its Maps feature on all iOS devices, making the switch from Google’s mapping feature to its own unique one.

“From our understanding, it is internally developed and will be radically different and better than existing Maps from others,” Wu said. “We hear the key reason why [Apple] decided to do this is that it believes it can deliver a much better user experience in Maps, not to mention provide further differentiation for its mobile devices business.”

Then we get on to the camera enhancements. While the iDevices currently have Photo Stream that share photos via the iCloud, this feature is largely overshadowed by third-party applications like Instagram. Wu says that in this years’ WWDC, we can expect improvements to the system.

Finally, to hardware. According to Wu, all Mac computers will most likely be upgraded  to Intel’s Ivy Bridge chipset, for superior quality and performance. These Macs should also follow the trend of recent iDevices by having Retina displays.

There is still one thing in my mind, no matter how improbable. Although I don’t think that there will be an announcement for the iPhone 5, it’s not like Apple hasn’t surprised us in the past.
