Charge Up With Summer!

June 19, 2012 in Android, Business, Business, Computers, iPad, iPhone, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Lifestyle, Mac, Main Blog, PC, Phones, Product, Slideshow, Tablets, Travel, Travel, Travel, Travel, Travel

So summer is here and the sun is shining, but now you have a terrible dilemma. You want to be outside but the electricity is inside, so what do you do? What if I told you, that all you had to do was strap on a backpack and you would be good to go? I know you may be thinking “Awww, it’s summer; schools out, I don’t wanna wear a backpack.” Just hear me out. Samsonite developed a very light weight that makes a great travel bag, laptop tote, or overnight rucksack. Introducing the Samsonite Solar Powered Backpack.

While the Solar Backpack clearly lacks creativity in name, Samsonite obviously chose to spend that time on the actual product. Time well spent, in my opinion.

The Use

The Solar Backpack goes on like a normal backpack, no surprise there. I found the straps and back to be extremely comfortable, even when carrying a laptop and a few books. Here is where it gets interesting though. The Solar Backpack has a 12v adapter (a car charging port) attached to the front pocket and connected to a solar panel. With this port you can plug in any adapter that you would normally plug into a car and supply power to that device. The backpack works great on iPhone, iPads, iPods, and numerous other portable devices. The smaller devices can be charged in about 4 hours of sunlight, while larger electronics will take longer. One trick that I do is use my USB Power Bank, a portable power pack, and have that connected to the backpack and always charging when in the sun, then I just plug in my devices into that and I can have power regardless of whether I have sun or not.

The only problem I had with Samsonite was that they do no provide a USB car adapter, therefore I had to purchase my own to use with my iDevices.

The Compartments

The Solar Backpack is a treasure trove of pockets. The Backpack consists of three main compartments ranging to the largest, which can accommodate a laptop up to 15.9 inches along with some books, to the smallest front panel which is great for storing all of those gadgets. On the outside you will find a side zippered pocket as well as a mesh water bottle holder, both of which are good sized. The only problem I have noticed with the compartments is that there is no hole in the front one to feed a charging cable out to a device or headphones from a charging device to my ears.

The Solar Panel

I thought I would breifely mention the quality of the solar panel. It is flexible and durable, and it appears that it will be able to withstand a beating, which is good especially if you are a frequent traveler and choose to use this bag as your carry on. The only problem I have noticed is that the both the solar panel and the backpack get quite hot, expectantly so, considering they are black and sitting out in the sun. I just worry that a laptop might get overheated in these conditions, so be careful.

 The Overall

Overall the Samsonite Solar Powered Backpack is a great product. It is very spacious and comfortable as well as durable. The solar technology works great at topping up my devices and I take comfort in the fact that I can now venture outside without having to worry about dead batteries. The only problems I had were the lack of an adapter as well as a headphone hole and, the excessive absorption of heat. The Solar Powered Backpack can be purchased HERE originally for $300, but right now it is ON SALE FOR $134.99!! So get it while its hot! I give it 4.5 Stars because of the minor problems.

Look Mom, No Hands!

The mouse. The Achilles’ Heel of the computer. The mouse is one of the greatest nuisances that computer users have to deal with, we just want to open what we want without hassle. Yet touchscreen computers are just to expensive, and that iPad next to you just doesn’t cut it yet. The Ion Wireless Air Mouse by Bellco Ventures Inc brings us one step closer.

The Design:

The Ion Air Mouse’s design is relatively simple. It consists of a partial glove with an attached sensor that runs a cable to

the finger where the mouse buttons for clicking are strapped on. Positioned on the sensor there is an on/off switch, the

micro-usb charging port and three LED lights, for charging status, power, and active or not. The finger p

ortion has three buttons; left click, right click, and pause. In order to connect the Air Mouse to your computer you simply plug in tiny USBdongle into you computer and your good to go. I like that Bellco chose this method of connection over something like bluetooth because it provided a stronger connection that is unaffected by interference. The Air Mmouse is compatible with Mac, PC, and Linux, with the only requirement being a USB port.

The Operation:

Using the Air Mouse could not be simpler, just slip the glove on and adjust it to your had, do the same with the finger tip, then plug in the adapter into your computer and wait for the drivers to install. Once that finishes, turn on the mouse and your ready to start clicking. The mouse does take some getting used to, but you can always adjust your computer’s mouse settings to make it easier. With the air mouse, just move your hand in the direction you want the cursor to move and then left or right click your heart away. If you want to readjust the position of your hand, or you need to type, just click the pause button and the Air Mouse’s motion sensing becomes inactive, but leaving clicking functionality available.

The Uses:

I must say, the Ion Air Mouse is very versatile. It works great for everyday use, but it really shines when you get a little creative. When I hook up my laptop to my TV, I can now just sit back and do all my controlling needs from the comfort of my couch. No longer will I have to get up over and over again to change the volume between fight seen and whispering dialogue. The Air Mouse also works well for presentations; the other day in fact, I used the Air Mouse for a presentation in English class, the mouse gave me the versatility to move around the room, while still being able to advance the slides.

The Overall

Overall, the Ion Wireless Mouse, is pretty awesome. It is the ultimate ergonomic device and looking like you’re part robot is an added bonus. The simple set up and use is great and the mouse is fun to use. The only draw back is that it does take some getting used to. I would give it 4.5 stars for sure. You can buy it for 79.95 Here.

Name: Blotter
Category: Productivity
Price: $9.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.6 or later
Plomonet rating: 10/10

The Mac application Blotter is one of the greatest calendar application of all time. This app features a great layout on that lays on top of your desktop. The half transparent theme makes it look perfect with the background.

The user interface is very simple and yet very comfortable to deal with. This app is also linked to the default app, iCal. Meaning that you can add or remove events or reminders from iCal. However, the only flaw for Blotter is that you cannot, whatsoever, delete or edit an event or reminder from the app itself. Once an event or reminder is created, it will stay there until the day has been passed unless if you delete it from iCal.

The innovative ideas for this app is very nice. You can position the calendar anywhere you want and you can even change the size and presentation as well. Overall, this app makes your desktop look less dull and more professional. This app costs $9.99 on the Mac App store and I personally think that this app is worth every penny. I highly recommend you to get this app if you are sick of the layout of iCal or other calendar apps. Please watch the video review above for a more detailed description and demonstration for Blotter.

Mac App Review: Comic Life 2

Price: $29.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later
Plomonet rating: 10/10

If you have read my full review of the Comic Life app for the iPad, you would know how truly fantastic and amazing Comic Life is. This time, I will be reviewing the Comic Life 2 for the Mac. If you haven’t read my full review of Comic Life for iPad, click here.

Comic Life is an app that first arrived on the Mac platform, where users were able to create high quality comic strips and posters right on their Macs. The app is extremely easy to use, and has been popular for a very long time, even until now. I have owned both Comic Life, and Comic Life 2 on the Mac, and it just blew me away.

The first thing you are greeted with is a template chooser, just like on the iPad. In the template chooser, you will find around 20 unique and amazing templates, which are not the same as the ones on the iPad version, and in order to choose, you just have to double click on it. Once you’ve chosen your template, you get a great working space, as shown in the image above, where you can choose different layouts, embed images, add speech bubbles and lettering, and also the option to share via email or Facebook.

The window is actually divided into 4 main parts. The first, labelled 1, is where you can choose different layouts. So if you are planning to create a comic strip with more than one page, you have ,ore layouts to chose from. The second part is where you can choose your photos you want to embed. Embedding photos are as easy as a simple drag and drop, and you can choose photos from your iPhoto library. The third part is where you can add extra lettering or speech bubbles to put emphasis on specific text or if you want to make the person in the photo look like they are talking. And the last part is of course your view finder. This is where you can move and edit texts, images and more. The cool thing that I love is that each move you do will give you a sound effect. As an example, when you are dragging images or texts, you get a rubber band sound effect. When you are choosing lettering or speech bubbles from the bottom part, you get a nice tinkle sound effect once you hover over an icon. It’s a small thing, but it’s a nice touch.

So overall, my review isn’t much different to the Comic Life for the iPad, as I believe that this is one of those apps that you just must have. Very easy to use, and very fun to use. It’s also very useful when you are making posters as well – good for students. This app is available for download at the Mac App Store for $29.99, and whilst this might be a little pricey for some students, it is definitely worth the investment. If you really don’t want to pay that much, you can always go for the iPad version that costs only $7.99, with pretty much all of the cool features and editing tools you get from the Mac version.

Mac App Review: Instaview

September 8, 2011 in Mac, Main Blog, Slideshow, Social Networking

Name: Instaview
Category: Social Networking
By: RogueSheep
Price: $7.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.6 or later
Plomonet rating: 8/10

Are you a heavy Instagram user on your iPhone? Do you want to be able to have a dedicated client for the Mac? We finally have one with the Instaview app.

As you might know, Instagram is a social photo sharing service for the iPhone. It has grown to an extreme extent where almost everyone uses this app, or at least have used it before. Instagram on the iPhone allows you to take photos, edit them with the large variety of skins, and also let you share them amongst your friends who also use Instagram. You can also share your Instagram photos on Facebook and Twitter. What you can also do is view the most popular photos that are viewed on the entire Instagram network. Photos that are shared can be ‘liked’, just like on Facebook, and users can also comment on the photos.

With the Instaview for the Mac, you will be able to view these photographs that were shared either by your friends, people you follow, or from people who have photographs that have the highest likes and comments. The user interface is very simple and elegant. As you can see in the image above, you are able to view an image in a frame, and you can navigate through the many photos by all the people you follow. You can also have more than one frame at a time, so you can divide your frames into photos by people you follow, by you and the popular photos.

Ad the name suggests, Instaview is a photo viewing app. This means that you cannot actually upload photographs. This may be a bummer for you, however, you cannot really complain about how elegant the app is.

Overall, this app is a great app for Instagram users, and I definitely recommend it if you’re heavy on Instagram. Very elegant design, and it looks very nice especially if you have an external monitor, or if you have a lot of ace left on yur 27inch display. The only thing I would like to see in this app is the ability to upload photographs, and hopefully even the ability to edit photos. But for its current price of $7.99, it might be slightly too pricey, but it is definitely worth it if it has the features I just mentioned.

Below is the full video review of Instaview:

Mac App Review: Macchiato

September 3, 2011 in Mac, Main Blog, Productivity, Uncategorized

Name: Macchiato
Category: Productivity
Price: $19.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.7 or later
Plomonet rating 6/10

Are you tired of the TextEdit app that is built-in to OS X? Are you sick of the boring user interface? Well, you should check out Macchiato.

Macchiato is essentially a text editing app that allows you to make notes in a stylish form. In terms of functions, it is very similar to the built-in TextEdit app. However, it is nothing like Pages or Microsoft Word. Macchiato has a very clean and simple user interface, with absolutely no control bars, meaning that you won’t be able to edit text by highlighting and clicking. What you can do though is use keyboard shortcuts, such as Command+B for Bold and Command+I for italics. This might be a bummer for some basic users, however it might be a pro for people who would sacrifice that for a cleaner user interface.

There are some other really unique text formatting tools. One of which is using “=” (equal sign) to underline and create a simple text, into a bold title. As you can see in the image above, what I did was simply inputted a lot of “=” under the title, and what the app did was it automatically re-rendered the text into a bold title. You can also change the size of the font by using “#” (hashtags) on each side of the text.

Macchiato also is OS X Lion friendly, because it includes features such as Auto-Save, Resume and Full-screen apps. Once in full-screen, everything goes away, and you can really just focus on your work.

Now moving onto the cons. There are quite a few negatives that I want to mention. one of which is the fact that there is not way to underline text. Just as you would expect a text editing app to do, including bold, italics and underline, this app does not have an underlining option. If you want to underline, you have to use the “=” I talked about earlier on, which will force your text to look like a title, rather than an underlined text.

Another con is that all of this use of “=” and “#” can be really annoying to use. Since we are all used to using the bold, italics and underline in common text editors, Macchiato can be a bummer in this sense. And, when you do want to make a text bold (using Command+B), you have to input this command before you even enter the text. And once you’ve entered the text, you have to click elsewhere for the formatting to be completed, otherwise the text will not become bold properly.

Finally, the biggest problem I’m having with this app is the price. You would expect that a simple app like this to be very affordable (maximum $0.99), or even free. However, this app will cost you $19.99. This means that this app is more expensive than the Pages app, that can do more and is more easier to use. Overall, I think this app is very stylish, however, it is not for everyone, and it is over priced.

Mac App Review: iHomework

September 2, 2011 in Education, Mac, Main Blog, Uncategorized

Name: iHomework
Category: Education
Price: $2.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later
Plomonet rating 6/10

If you are a student, and you just bought a new Mac for high-school, college or university, it might be worth checking out the iHomework app for the Mac.

iHomework is an app, as the name suggests, that allows you to record your homework or coursework with a deadline. First of all, the home user interface is easy enough for you to figure out what you need to input for each homework you make. However, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to actually add a homework, because at first glance I thought I would be able to quickly jot down my homework, however, I was not able to do so because all boxes were grey and did not allow me to type anything in it. I then realized that there were +/- buttons on the bottom to the left side of the app, where I then was able to add assignments.

As you may see in the image above, the app is divided into three parts, the assignments, assignment details, and the right column consists of your teachers, courses, reminders and reading. Let’s talk about the left column first. This is where you can actually add assignments, and also see all your assignments at a glance. When I say at a glance, you actually have three options: Day view, Week view and All assignments. In my view, the Day view is pretty pointless as when it comes to the next day, you are not able to view the homework from yesterday, unless you click on the Week view, or All.

Moving onto the middle section. This is where you can add assignments with the details of the homework including the title, type, course, deadline and grade, just as you would expect from a homework app. However, there’s one thing I really like about this app, and it’s the fact that you can attach files to your assignment details. Meaning that if you were working on an assignment in class, and you had to finish it off for homework, you can simply attach that file to your assignment details, and whenever you come back later from home, you can easily track which files are related to which assignments you were working on.

Now moving onto the right section. This is where you can see all your teachers, course, reminders and reading. The teachers section is pretty self explanatory, as well as the course section. Reminders is where you can add small emenders to yourself, and this can sometimes come in handy, however, it’s not always handy as you have to click on the reminders tab to be able to see the reminders. However, you can set the date and time, meaning that you are alerted when the time comes. The final tab, the reading tab, was hard to me to understand what this tab even meant at first, however I figured out that this is actually quite useful especially in literature lessons, or lessons where you will be using your textbook very often, such as Geography. In this section, you are able to input the title of the book, and page numbers, bookmarks, as well as the ability to link your book to your assignments. This means that you can pretty much see every detail (teachers, course, books, attached files) when looking at each assignment you have made.

Overall, I think that this is a great homework app, especially for students who are looking to throw away their diaries for noting down homeworks by hand. This app only costs you 2.99 on the Mac App Store. There is also an iOS version of this app, for both the iPhone and the iPad (universal), and the full review of that is coming up very soon.

Mac App Review: Spacie

August 31, 2011 in Mac, Main Blog, Uncategorized, Utilities

Name: Spacie
Category: Utilities
Price: $1.99
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.5 or later
Plomonet rating 7/10

Have you ever gone through the trouble of trying to free up your hard disk space, but not being able to find which file is taking up the most space? If so, then Spacie is for you.

Spacie is an app for the Mac that allows you to scan your entire hard disk and present the file size, as well as the last modified date, in an interface that is similar to the Mac’s Finder window. In fact, you can just use Spacie as your Finder because what Spacie does is it has a sidebar on the left, just like in Finder, that shows you your hard disk, as well as the main folders such as Applications, Documents etc. So you can navigate through your entire computer within Spacie, and add files by dragging and dropping, and add folders just by clicking on the “Add Place” button.

The main difference between the normal Finder and Spacie is the fact that you can list ALL your files whether in the order of files size. This comes in handy when you are wanting to free up some space on your Mac. You can list them from your entire Macintosh HD, Desktop, Applications, Documents, external hard drives and more, even including your Dropbox folder. You can then mark files or folders, which you want to delete, with labels.

Another cool feature of Spacie is that there are notifications. The app will show a pop-up menu to notify if your hard disk is running out of storage. The other cool thing is that this notification will also work when the app realizes that your external hard drive is also running out of storage.

So far, I think that this app is great, since it does everything as advertised. I also haven’t found any problems using this app. However, the only thing I’ve noticed whilst using this app is that every time you re-open the app, it rescans everything all over again from the beginning. This might take up some time especially if you have a large hard drive. However, this is logical as you will always be downloading new files to your computer. In addition, this won’t be much of a problem at all since you will not be using this app on a daily basis. This app only comes in handy when you really are tight in storage capacity.

At the time of review, the Spacie app will cost you $1.99 from the Mac App Store. However, the developers are claiming that this price is a 50% off limited sale, meaning that the cost will double in the near future. So be sure to check this app out before the price rises!

Innovative Mastermind Steve Jobs Steps Down as Apple CEO!

August 26, 2011 in Main Blog, Slideshow

Steve Jobs has now stepped down as CEO of Apple Computers. He filed his letter of resignation (through email) stating that he cannot fulfill his full-time duties as CEO, but would still like to serve as Chairman of the Board, Director and Apple employee. Though this is tragic news for Apple consumers and share holders, it could be much worse if he actually decided to leave Apple infinitely. He also suggested in this email to Apple that Tim Cook (current COO of Apple) should take over his position As CEO.

Some might ask, why is the stepping down of Steve Jobs so important? What made him so great? These questions can easily be explained from his history, so here is a brief overview of Mr. Jobs’ effect on apple and the rest of the computer industry.

As a young, college drop-out entrepreneur, Steve and his very close friend (and partner in business) Steve Wozniak started out working in Mr. Jobs’ parents garage. From the Apple 1 that Steve Wozniak hand made to the Apple 2 that received national attention, the Steve’s worked together and built the foundation of the “all-in-one” Personal Computer and began the revolution. Thus Apple was born.

The beginning though, was not all smooth sailing for Steve Jobs. Shortly after Apple introduced the Macintosh computer, Apple Fired Steve Jobs, mainly because they felt he was too young and too inexperienced to run such a company of Apple’s caliber. Looking back, Steve Job’s says that it was probably one of the best things to happen to him (Being fired from Apple). He stated at his Stanford Commencement Address that being fired put things in perspective for him. That it sent him into one of the most creative times of his life, he felt as if he was a beginner again, less sure about everything. During this Period, Steve created PIXAR studios, which is now the most successful animated movie producer in the world and NeXT Computing. Apple during this time was struggling to keep up with with other companies such as Microsoft which was dominating the PC market at the time with the latest launch of their new Windows 95 operating system. In an attempt to get back on track, Apple purchased NeXT Computing and brings back Steve Jobs as an advisor.

When Steve Jobs came back, he would not make the same mistakes that he made before. In July 1997, Steve signs as intern CEO for an annual income of only $1. With a two word slogan, “Think Different”, Steve tells the world from a Macworld Boston gathering that Apple is going to get back on track with bright things in the companies future. Steve announces that Apple and Microsoft have a new partnership to work together on new various software including Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. Steve also released OS X 8 along with a brand new iMac computer. In four months, the “Funky” iMac with various color options became the number one selling computer in America, soaring Apples stock back into life. Steve and his ideas did not stop there though, Steve launched 25 Apple stores throughout the United States in an attempt to make a convenient place for consumers to experience Apple. This was an attempt by Steve to “woo over” Microsoft users and provide them a passageway to a different way of computing, and it worked. Sales went through the roof with the introduction of these convenient neighborhood stores.

Many of the products that Steve Jobs innovated have lead the industry in their respective classes. Some of the best examples are, the iPod along with iTunes which reshaped the music industry. The iPhone which redefined smartphones. The Apple TV which has changed the way that we view television and the internet while still exploiting the large screen size. The Macbook Air which launched a new revolution of extra-portable laptops. And Lets not forget about the iPad which has just simply redefined the entire way we look at mobile computing and what technology is capable of doing. How many companies can say that they have produced as many industry leading products as Apple has been able of doing.

The success of Apple really isn’t a mystery. Bill Gates might have summarized Steve’s talents best when he quoted, ” I think in terms of intuitive taste for people and products, the way he (Steve Jobs) does things is truly different, and I think its magical.” Steve just knew what the people wanted, it was that simple. But at the same time, he always wanted perfection from his employees. He wants himself and his employees to do the best work that they possibly can and say that they are truly proud of their finished product. His strive for the best possible truly is reflected onto the products Apple releases time and again. The products are beautifully put together pieces of art inside and out while still meeting the power and work demands of the general public and even power users. Jobs knew how to speak the peoples language and knows how to win others over with his ideas.

Sadly though, the time has come that because of his fight against cancer, Steve no longer commit full time to his company that he put so much time and effort into. He built a dynasty that had just recently become the most valuable company in the world in terms of market capitalization. Though they lost the top spot to Exxon Mobile these past two days due to Steve’s announcement and fear by investors, it shouldn’t take long until the company is once again back on top. Just like its meant to be!

As for now, Steve will still serve a key role in the company. But, when he does indeed leave for good, he sure has left his mark hasn’t he?

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

- Steven N. Jobs
