OS X Lion USB Drives Now Available for $69

August 16, 2011 in Mac, Main Blog, Uncategorized

When Apple discussed about OS X Lion during their WWDC 2011 keynote, they mentioned that the OS is only available for download via the Mac App Store. We have also covered this news in the past. However, after a few short days, Applehas announced that they are going to sell physical copies of OS X Lion, in a USB stick form, for those people who do not have a decent broadband connection. This means that you can install OS X Lion without even having an internet connection. Apple has begun selling its $69 Lion USB thumb drives.

Below is Apple’s statement on their USB drives with OS X Lion:

OS X Lion is available on a USB thumb drive for installation without the need for a broadband Internet connection. Just plug the drive into your USB port and follow the instructions to install. OS X Lion is also available for a lower price as a digital download from the Mac App Store.

However, the main downside of purchasing OS X Lion as a USB drive, is its price. Whilst $69 is definitely cheaper than any other operating systems, and any Mac operating systems before Snow Leopard, it definitely is much more expensive than the $29.99 price tag when downloaded off from the Mac App Store. Of course, this is due to the physical package of the USB drive, and the USB drive itself, along with shipments. However, Snow Leopard was also delivered in a physical form, and sold for $29, but this was a DVD form, in which Apple is definitely happy to kill.

During Apple’s Q3 Fiscal Year 2011 Quarterly Earnings Call, it has been officially confirmed that the next generation desktop operating system, Mac OS X Lion, is to be released tomorrow on July 20th. We have no details as of the exact time it will be out, however the fact that it has been confirmed is already great news. In the recent days, we have been smelling a very close release of 20th, as many retail stores around the world have been posting up Lion posters, and posters including the purchase of Lion with Apple’s gift card.

OS X Lion will be available for download only via the Mac App Store for $29.99, as well as Lion Server which is avaiable for $49.99.

OS X Lion Golden Master Seed Released. Final Version to be Released on July 14th

July 2, 2011 in Mac, Main Blog, Uncategorized

Yesterday, on July 1st, Apple has released their final, polished, GM seed of OS X Lion to developers. We all know that Lion will be released sometime during this month, and there have been rumors floating around the web claiming release dates of the new OS. If you want to know more about the features in OS X Lion, check out Steven’s article by clicking here.

So far, in this GM seed, we have found a new feature where your Mac will teach you about using multi-touch gestures, when you first boot up your computer:

The first rumor we saw was the July 19th date, however this doesn’t seem to be accurate as Apple will be announcing their quarterly financial results on the same day. And in the past, Apple has never announced any new products on the same day as their financial results call. However, a more accurate rumor found by 9to5mac, claims that the release date of OS X Lion will be on July 14th. We also expect the new MacBook Airs and white MacBooks to be refreshed at the same time, sporting Thunderbolt ports, Sandy Bridge processors, FaceTime HD camera – as retailers such as Best Buy has reported a shortage of stock and the inability to ship the current line of these machines.

OS X Lion will be available for download only via the Mac App Store for $29.99, as well as Lion Server which is avaiable for $49.99.

Discussion: WWDC’11 Predictions [Video]

May 21, 2011 in Main Blog, Uncategorized

With just a few short weeks until Apple’s annual worldwide developers conference kicks off, I wanted to give you my predictions as to what I think will be announced during this year’s WWDC’11. First of all, WWDC is a developers conference where software developers from all over the world, developing for the Mac OS X platform as well as the iOS platform, gather together and have a conference to discuss about how to develop software for these platforms whilst taking advantage of the new technologies that are built-in to the OS. To start the entire week off, Steve Jobs presents a keynote to announce exciting new products.

Until WWDC’07, Apple’s main focus was on Mac OS X. However, as the iPhone was introduced in Macworld 2007, Apple’s main focus turned to the iOS (originally known as iPhone OS) platform. In WWDC’08, the iPhone 3G was announced, as well as the public release of iPhone OS 2.0. In WWDC’09, Scott Forstall discussed about iPhone OS 3.0, whilst Phil Schiller introduced the iPhone 3GS. And in WWDC’10, Steve Jobs covered the iPhone 4, as well as the re-branded iOS 4. During these years, the main focus was on iOS. The only time the Mac OS X was discussed was when Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was almost ready for shipment in 2009.

This year, however, the focus will be on both Mac OS X and iOS. The next generation of Mac OS X Lion was first previewed back in October 2010, where Apple introduced new features such as Mission Control, Full Screen Apps, LaunchPad and the Mac App Store. Since then, alongside the Early 2011 MacBook Pro announcements, Apple previewed even more features of Lion on their website, such as further Multitouch Gesture support, Mail 5, Versions, Auto-Save and AirDrop. Apple has been releasing developer preview versions since then (up to version 3 as of now) for developers to test out the new OS, as well as test their own apps. We expect the Mac OS X Lion to start shipping 2 weeks after the WWDC event, through both the Mac App Store, for people who run Snow Leopard, and with DVDs for people with Leopard or below.

On the iOS side, Apple usually holds a preview event during the March-April timeframe. However, this year, that did not happen. Instead, we had the iPad 2 announcement, with iOS 4.3 (disappointing many people as they were expecting iOS 5). Therefore, during this year’s WWDC, it is certain that Apple will be previewing their next generation of their mobile operating system, iOS 5. My thoughts on what I would like to see in iOS 5 can be found by clicking here. Because this will just be a preview, the actual launch of the new OS will not happen until the Golden Master Candidate Beta has been released, which we suspect to be a few months later. This has lead many people to believe that the next iPhone 5 to be announced in September, where Apple usually announce new iPods and new versions of iTunes. It would be disappointing if Apple did not announce iPhone 5 during WWDC, but it would also be awkward and outdated for the iPhone 5 to still be running iOS 4. We will keep you updated about this as new sources appear.
